"Art, Death, Meditation, & Everyday Life" New Work from L'Andrae' Bradley
The Fuse Factory Presents: Elka Bong / T & T / Ann B Klorox
The Fuse Factory is proud to present experimental electronics/violin duo Elka Bong (NY), alt-folk guitarist T & T (CMH), and experimental electronic musician Ann B Klorox (CLE). Doors 8pm, suggested donation $5-$10. All ages, BYOB.
About the performers:
Elka Bong is Al Margolis and Walter Wright. Al Margolis (viola/violin/clarinet) was active in the 1980s American cassette underground through his cassette label Sound of Pig Music and is co-founder of experimental music label Pogus Productions, which he continues to run. Active under the name If, Bwana since 1984, his works swing between fairly spontaneous studio constructions and more process-oriented composition. It has been said “that Al Margolis/If, Bwana is some sort of evil genius working with raw materials which are never adapted to a genre or a context, because they create one in that very moment. Those sources are radically altered up to an utterly unrecognizable state, anarchic manifestations moving in compact determination.” It’s all true…
Walter Wright (small electronics/amplified drum kit) is an interdisciplinary artist; his practice includes computer programming, electro-acoustic music, and video performance. His focus is on “improvisation as a way of being present in the world.” Wright was one of the first video animators. At Computer Image Corp he animated letters, words, and titles for Children’s Television Workshop. He was a video animator for Ed Emshwiller’s Thermogenesis and Scapemates, aired by WNET’s Artists Television Workshop. Scapemates was the first computer graphics video nominated for an Emmy Award (1971). He showed his work at the first computer art conference at the Kitchen (NYC, 1973). In 1973-76, as artist-in-residence at the Experimental Television Center, he pioneered video performance touring public access centers, colleges, and galleries with the Paik/Abe Video Synthesizer. Wright has developed software and hardware for artists including the Video Shredder, a desktop video processor for the TARGA2K. Currently he works with Max/MSP, softVNS, and Processing. His programs and sketches are available on his blog – nohtv.wordpress.com Wright performs with several groups including LOS CONDENADOS, Egregoros, and ensemble inedit. He plays a Bugbrand Board Weevil, a Flower Electronics Little Blue Boy, contact mics by Crank Sturgeon, drums and percussion. He recently toured with an amplified drum kit and is experimenting Martin Freeman’s Horndog and Peter Blasser’s Shnth. Wright is a co-founder of 119 Gallery, the first digital art gallery on the World Wide Web, located in Lowell MA.
T & T began as 4-track recording project in 2005. Though T & T occasionally expands to include other musicians, they perform and record mostly solo, with a soulful croon that relates stories both mournful and beautiful. The music has a timeless, folk-noir feel; one gets the sense that these songs are beings of their own accord, birthed by magic into the air. The guitarwork is deliberate but takes its time, weaving through the songs’ intimate narratives with confident ease.
Ann B Klorox is a one woman band of Voice, Vowel, Nostril & Analog Synthesizer & other ready noisemakers.

Frequency Fridays: Battle Trace / Rough Housing / Doctah X
Our October 2016 Frequency Fridays show features experimental tenor saxophone quartet Battle Trance (NYC), jazz improv trio Rough Housing (Jack Wright + Evan Lipson + Zach Darrup (PHIL)), and experimental electronic musician/producer Doctah X Room (OH). Date: Friday, October 7 2016. Location: It Looks Like It’s Open (13 E. Tulane Rd., 43202). Admission: $10, $15 for 2. Doors open 8pm. BYOB, all ages. Our Frequency Fridays 2016-2017 season is supported by a grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council.
About the performers:
Tenor saxophone quartet Battle Trance is proud to announce their sophomore album Blade of Love, which will be released digitally and on CD August 26 on New Amsterdam Records, with a vinyl edition released by NNA Tapes. The follow-up to their widely acclaimed debut Palace of Wind (2014), Blade of Love is an elemental composition that aims to fulfill the tenor saxophone’s expansive potential as an ensemble instrument. Working within the intimate intersection of the human body/breath and the saxophone, Blade of Love is a spiritual and enigmatic work with a deep emotional resonance. Since forming in 2012, the four saxophonists in Battle Trance (Travis Laplante, Patrick Breiner, Matt Nelson, Jeremy Viner) have spent hundreds of hours deepening their musical connection with each other, maturing as an ensemble through relentless touring everywhere from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, Montreal to Vancouver, and most places in between. The three movements of Blade of Love were composed by Battle Trance leader Travis Laplante and recorded by the group in a wooden room with soaring ceilings in the Vermont forest, after spending two years of rigorous rehearsals working to perfect the array of extended techniques, both virtuosic and primal, required to bring the challenging piece to life. Blade of Love’s central focus is on the physical and spiritual intersection of the saxophone and the human body. The saxophone is one of the few instruments that literally enters the body of the person playing it, and Blade of Love is a medium for this sacred meeting place, with each member of Battle Trance using the saxophone as a vessel for the human spirit.
Roughhousing is Jack Wright, saxophones, Evan Lipson, double bass, and Zach Darrup, guitar and objects. Roughhousing is the right word for the free improv this group does. At first you might think this is pure dissonance, until you realize it’s all synchronized close listening to each other from years of playing together. The part of the country most responsive to this music is the Midwest and Southeast, where they are presently touring – Columbus is the last of fifteen gigs
These three have all been residents of the Spring Garden Music House in Philadelphia, Zach presently. Jack and Evan have been playing for over ten years, most recently in Wrest, with percussionist Ben Bennett, originally from Columbus and now living in Philadelphia. Zach and Jack started playing in the June of 2014, an intense engagement since then, the most regular musical activity for both of them, releasing Meet and Greet. Here is a recording of Rough Housing performing at XFEST 2015 in Holyoke MA, a 2015 recording taken at Wave Farm in Hudson NY, and a more recent Jack and Zach recording taken in 2016.
Doctah X’s aka Tony Harrington’s musical inspiration began in Lexington, KY in the 1950′s by watching and listening with great fascination to his blind Aunt and blind Uncle play Gospel on the guitar and piano. His other early musical influences included The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck. Like many others it was the European musicians that introduced him to and awakened in him an appreciation for his own American Blues. Currently, Doctah X resides in Columbus, Ohio where he maintains his same passionate pursuit of learning music as he did as a youth with the pawn shop guitar. He continues to play guitar, perform solo, and collaborate with local and international artists both on stage and in the studio. His solo work includes DJing and Live PA sets. His collaborative work includes touring the Midwest and East Coast with SkArob- a live dub partnership with the ever brilliant Bogdan Ghenea aka Rekloos that is signed with NYC based label Subatomic Sound. Presently, he is represented by Boom One Records and has enjoyed working with label mates Boom One Soundsystem, B. Davis, Dubsmith, Riverside Rockers, Jim the Boss, and Mechanik Project. In his studio he records and produces solo tracks as well as tracks for other local and international artists. Mr. Harrington also continues to provide innovative programming, as he has over the last fifteen years through the Columbus Metropolitan Library system, giving youth an opportunity to create sound, put poetry and spoken word to music, and learn more about their rich American music history.

Workshop: Live Improv with Jack Wright
About the workshop: We are pleased to offer a live improv workshop with renowned saxophone player Jack Wright. Described twenty years ago as an “undergrounder by design,” Wright has been a saxophone improviser traveling through the United States and Europe since the early 1980s in search of interesting partners and playing situations. He is well known for having brought improvised music into the heartland of America at a time when it was totally unknown. Now at age 72, his musical range continues to span the width of his geographic explorations, from fiery, breathless free jazz to quiet, breath-filled, and often animalistic sounds. His work has been documented extensively on underground labels since the early 1980s. (See links below.) “Jack is utterly one-of-a-kind,” says Tom Orange, New Ghosts co-founder and Jazz Director for WCSB 89.3 FM. “Much of his playing would outrage a traditional sax instructor, but no one shows how much beauty and intrigue can be found by playing the ‘wrong’ way. Listeners with open ears and minds are going to be in for a treat.”
Required: An instrument of your choice, or your voice.
Workshop fees: To reserve a seat in the workshop, please register here:http://thefusefactory.org/events/live_improv_with_jack_wright/. The workshop is being offered on a $10-$20 sliding scale. Mud Lotus: Honoring the Ancestors
"The great secret of death, and perhaps its deepest connection with us, is this: that, in taking from us a being we have loved and venerated death does not wound us without, at the same time, lifting us toward a more perfect understanding of this being and of ourselves." -Rainer Rilke.Friday, October 21st, 6:30-10pm (Art Opening)
Dear Friends, This October we will join with the many wisdom traditions that honor the ancestors in the fall, reflecting the death and rebirth in the seasons' cycle around us. We welcome you to bring a story, a song, or an object that reminds you of an ancestor of family, spirit, or land.
We will begin by sharing our remembrances. We'll sit for two 20 min. sessions with walking meditation in-between. Then we will do an "earth touching" ceremony based on the Plum Village tradition.
We believe sitting practice should be accessible to everyone, all bodies, body types, and abilities. Folks can stay 5 min. or the whole time and move in whatever way best supports their practice. We welcome folks of all religions, races, sexualities and gender identities. Please let us know if there is something we can do to support your practice.

"Art, Death, Meditation, & Everyday Life" New Work from L'Andrae' Bradley
L'Andrae' Bradley will show new work on Friday 6:30-10pm and will lead a "Meditative Art Doodle (MAD)" workshop on the creative process on Sunday, 1:30-3:30 (see below).
L'Andrae's work emerges from the imagination and from his practice of mindfulness in the Shambhala tradition. This work colorfully explores the inevitability of death and the sacred quality of the ordinary.
L'Andrae' says, "My work has always been about the evolution of doodling and applying the awareness of the action itself into a work of art. It’s a style that I’ve been doing and re-discovering for over 15 years. My most recent work I created with Prismacolor Markers and Micron Pens. This body of work, I have incorporated various colors, and patterns, of the ups & downs of life-along with my personal practice of daily meditation.
I personally feel the work I have now been creating has been more than just the concept of doodling, but also a personal form of meditation as well."
Prints, t-shirts, etc. of his work can also be found at: https://society6.com/goodearthtreasure

Workshop: Ableton Live for Absolute Beginners
About the workshop
While much has changed since the birth of electronic music, the spirit of the music that connects composers of today with those of the late 60s and early 70s remains. Tools such as Ableton Live allow contemporary electronic music composers to channel this spirit while exploring the possibilities new technologies have to offer. This workshop is being taught primarily from an artistic perspective, rather than that of a technician. In other words, the philosophy behind this workshop is about making the most of what you know as an artist and musician who uses technology, rather than acquiring technical knowledge for its own sake.
Workshop topics include:
basic MIDI functions
Ableton Intro’s library of sounds
editing audio clips
effects and equalization within Ableton
exporting tips for master-ready mixes
using Ableton in live performance
No previous experience in Ableton Live is required. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop with a trial or purchased copy of Ableton installed.
About the instructor
John Daniel (b.1989 in Hemet, CA) is an American musician currently living in Chicago, Illinois. His current project, Forest Management, began in 2011 in Daniel’s hometown of Westlake, Ohio. His newest release, ‘Shifting’, will be out on October 7th on White Reeves Productions.

Trance Studies: Walking with Ancestors
On Sunday November 6th we will honor the ancestors with a ritual and trance for visiting the dead and exchanging messages. We all have ancestors of our flesh and of our spirit. We have beloved dead, relatives, friends, and pets. In this ritual we acknowledge them and share our bounty with them, sending them blessings and including them in our circle. Then we will do a trance based on the posture of ancient Egyptian figure Kouros to contact them and exchange messages.
(Image of Pharaoh Menkaura, Egyptian Old Kingdom, 2490-2472 BCE, by Susan Josephson)
Come and experiment with us in this trance. Let us vision together. May we experience ourselves resting in own power.
For more than twenty years, Susan G. Josephson has lead workshops which take participants through an ecstatic trance experience. Based on the work of her mother, the anthropologist and spiritual teacher, Felicitas D. Goodman, Susan has developed a syncretic technique for visionary experience.
(Learn more about Felicitas’s legacy in the US and Germany at cuyamungueinstitute.com and cuyamungue-institut.de)
*Instructions for participation: Please arrive on time, the door will be closed at 7:45 so that the session can begin without interruption. Fasting will enhance the experience, but is not required. For best results, do not eat at least 30 minutes prior to the session. Avoid alcohol throughout the day. Wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing metal that touches the body.
*Young adults / teens welcome.
