Improvised music workshop: Open to
all participants!
Instructor: Vic Rawlings
Workshop fee: $15
Learn to listen and respond to sound and music in ways that may be new to you!
This workshop invites your active participation – it is not a lecture. Participants will engage in a series of structured exercises and generate sound and music as a group, in real time.
ALL participants are welcome, including those who do not consider themselves musicians. No musical background or technical skill is required. You are equally welcome with no experience improvising or if you are an experienced improvisor. ANY instrument is welcome, including voice. This includes objects not commonly seen as musical instruments as well as conventional musical instruments. If you do not have an instrument, one can be provided for you. If you need amplification, please bring your own, as we don’t have enough to supply everyone.
We will work directly with sound, beyond the standard use of rhythm, melody and harmony. We will explore free improvisation as an ensemble in this context. This is a hands-on, sound-making workshop, and thus we will not be spending time discussing music theory or music history or referencing jazz or any other widely recognized musical style.
Please do your best to arrive at the specified time! Once the workshop has begun, we will not be able to accommodate latecomers.
[Note: We will not turn away anyone due to financial constraints! To make alternative arrangements, please contact Alison Colman at alison@thefusefactory.org]
About the instructor: Vic Rawlings (cello/electronics) employs a still and unstable sound language ranging from visceral excess to extreme austerity. He uses an amplified cello augmented with extensive and invasive preparations of his design, adapted from Baroqueera designs. He has developed a vocabulary of extended techniques, approaching neartotal abstraction from the cello. As an entirely separate instrument, he uses and continually develops a modular electronic instrument with a highly unstable interface, acoustically realized by an array of exposed speaker elements.
Rawlings primarily presents improvised music in the predictable settings and durations. Exceptions to this are installationlength performances and a series of performances in standard music venues that suspend concepts of site and content. He has composed and recorded soundtracks for internationally distributed films by Catherine Pancake, Jeffrey Daniel Silva, and Alla Kovgan, as well as composing and performing live scores for theater and dance.

Open Meditation: Renewing Mindfulness
This session
will focus on re-introducing and re-newing meditation practice. Participants
are welcome to practice any form of meditation or quiet prayer they feel
comfortable with and are invited to share their techniques and the experience
of getting to know themselves with awareness. Two 20 minute sessions will be
followed by tea. There is no cost. Donations are welcome.
The benefits
of a daily sitting practice are clear, but it may feel difficult to add
something new to our already busy lives. As the Spring comes with wind and
rain, I've found my practice deepen, not by adding anything, but by
subtracting. Doing less and enjoying more. A process of simplifying.
There are
definitely times when action is necessary. But there is little benefit to
suffering over the things we cannot control. To practice daily mindfulness is
to practice patience. Lately, seeing new sprouts arrive, I've been reminded of
the poem by Bashō:
Sitting
quietly, doing nothing,
spring
comes and the grass grows by itself.
Let's try
this simple practice together.

Clarinet Panic Deluxx (Toronto) +
Fissure Shaft (IN) + Forest Walker (CMH)
We are proud to present experimental chamber music/avant garde math rock ensemble Clarinet Panic Deluxx (Toronto), dark experimental musician Fissure Shaft (IN), and ambient musician/composer Forest Walker (CMH), who will be performing at It Looks Like Its Open the evening of Thursday, April 17. Location: It Looks Like Its Open. Doors: 7pm. Suggested donation: $5. BYOB, all ages.
About the performers:
CPDLXX is a ensmeble born in 2009 as vehicle for the dense music of cellist Cory Latkovich’s dreams. Clattering ahead like the score to a never ending horror film, they inch towards a climax as cello and sax play a game of back & forth only to be driven forward by systematically antagonistic drum patterns and their own instrumental curiosity: bastard chamber music meets math rock.
Fissure Shaft is John Jude Windland, from the village of West College Corner, IN. Fissure Shaft is at the moment creating between dark experimental and something you can groove to, utilizing current, advanced modern electronic techniques, as well as unique sounds via circuit bending and hommade custom instruments.
