Writing about the nature of impermanence, Zen philosopher Dogen reminded his students,
Feeling lost and trapped in my emotions this week, a dear friend reminded me how my suffering can be like the labor pains of a mother giving birth to a new life. If I can make space for my own heart to expand beyond the boundaries of my habits, I can allow myself to become something wholly new, something never before seen on this earth. Neither simply better nor worse, this new self stands at the limits of what is possible. Seeing my experience as the ground of a limitless transformation allows me to experience my emotions fully.
Looking at myself in its process with a sense of wonder, I can be wholly unexpected to myself. I can be both like the mother offering up a part of her body to the air and like the new child taking it's first look at the bright sky. Both the mother and the child carry ancestral knowledge of birth in their bodies. Again and again I am reminded, this is the central task: to trust myself in becoming.
Real rebirth is not an idea, but something to be experienced uniquely, in ourselves and in community. The most direct way to cultivate a feeling of renewal is to set aside all projects, become still, and watch with focused curiosity the newness of time.
Let's try this simple practice together.

Writing about the nature of impermanence, Zen philosopher Dogen reminded his students,
Do not wait for the teachings from others,
the words of the scriptures,
and for the principles of enlightenment.
We are born in the morning and die in the evening;
the person we saw yesterday is no longer with us today.
These facts we see with our own eyes and hear with our own ears.

Binaural beats and the oscilloscope: A gentle introduction to sound art
In this workshop, participants will learn how to generate binaural beats, and in the process learn the basics of the oscilloscope. Binaural beats (discovered by Heinrich Wilhelm Dove in 1839), or binaural tones, are auditory processing artifacts, or apparent sounds, caused by specific physical stimuli. The brain produces a phenomenon resulting in low-frequency pulsations in the amplitude and sound localization of a perceived sound when two tones at slightly different frequencies are presented separately, one to each of a subject’s ears, using stereo headphones. A beating tone will be perceived, as if the two tones mixed naturally, out of the brain.
The oscilloscope is an electronic measurement devices that can be used to observe the characteristics of a circuit in real time. It can also be used for debugging and hardware hacking.
Instructors: Krista Faist and Samuel Hoar
Fee: $27.50

What the Christmas Tree REALLY Saw
The Holiday Season is a time of cheer and happiness, joy, peace and goodwill... or is it? In the rush and insanity of the holidays, come join us and discover a new expression of this season for yourself.
You're invited to share YOUR story. Together, we'll explore how our own deepest commitments are often buried beneath the latest fads and fashions.
Hosted and narrated by Douglas Evergreen, the Christmas Tree, you'll come away with new ways to find your heart, rise above the madness and break through to the joy and hope that is so often missing at this time of year.
An interactive performance by Paul Ricketts.
