The Wasps Nests and Valerie Keuhne
Ben Bennett / Ryan Jewell duo
Worm Man
The Wasps Nests and Valerie Kuehne are a loving mix of grindcore, cabaret, performance art, punk, and neo-classical art song, with a dash of free improvisation for good measure. Valerie Kuehne is "part punk classical cellist, part performance artist, but her performance art isn't the foofy, mannered kind - it's oldschool 80s style and it has fangs. And it's hilarious. (Lucid Culture)" The Wasps Nests are Jeffrey Young on violin (thingNY, Food Will Win the War, Valerie Kuehne's Dream Zoo) and Alex Cohen on drums (Malignancy, Pyrrhon, Pak). The New York-based trio will perform a new set of songs by Valerie about the apocalypse, processed food, torrid love affairs, dead comedians, and West Virginia. Their tour will include dates throughout Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Kentucky. http://www. valeriekuehne.com http://www. dreamzoo.bandcamp.com

Open Meditation: Seeing with the Heart
This month's meditation will be a collaborative experiment exploring sight and empathy with photographer David Ike. After a 20min meditation, allowing our thoughts to settle, David will offer us a handful of images for contemplation. As we look at the shapes and color made from a projector's light on the wall, we can also bring our mind's eye inward to the motions of our own heart.
As a part of the 14 Mindfulness Trainings, Thich Nhat Hanh asks his students to affirm, "We will learn to look with the eyes of compassion at those we think are the cause of our anger." To look with the eyes of compassion is to know that others are not the cause of our emotions but that our feelings arise in the meeting of our heart with an object of experience. When we learn to care for our own suffering, and we see that others are the victims of their own pain, will our anger dissolve?
To look with the eyes of compassion is see with our own heart open and vulnerable to experience, available to whatever comes forward - to feel the emotions on another's face, to turn with the motion of a wing, to jump with the dance of light.
Please join us for this conversation and experiment of sight and feeling.
We will sit for two 20 minute silent sessions, the second one with images, and will have quiet walking in between. We will have time for every participant to talk before and after. Those new to meditation are welcome to join and participate as much as they feel comfortable. Those new to meditation are welcome to give it a try and can learn from the experience of the group. There is no cost. Donations will be accepted.

Trance Studies: Grandmother Bear
As in the past, we will have two sessions of the Cuyamungue trance. Each consists of a particular posture and the sound of a gourd rattle. Through a particular style of concentration, participants can "ride" the rattle into an aware, dream-like experience of an alternate reality. We will have an introduction beforehand and a discussion of our experiences afterward.
The first session will be the Singing Shaman posture, which incorporates vocalization (useful for "opening the door"), and the second will be the Bear posture. This is trance posture based in Native American sculpture. The energy from Grandfather (or mother) Bear is understood to help in healing (psychological, spiritual) and restoring harmony and balance. Come with your pain, come with your hurt, and offer it to the arms of the Bear.
We take an experimental approach to trance studies, not a dogmatic one. Openminded people of all kinds are welcome. Find out what's useful for your practice.
*Young adults / teens welcome.
*Instructions for participation: Please arrive on time, the door will be closed at 7:15 so that the session can begin without interruption. Fasting will enhance the experience, but is not required. For best results, do not eat at least 30 minutes prior to the session. Avoid alcohol throughout the day. Wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing metal.
*Susan is not expecting payment so this session is by donation. Feel free to contribute to her visit and the maintenance of the studio space with a small contribution.

to express in the most unlikely place
even though you get to go
experience the experiment
Sarah Weinstock and Abby Nelson team up to explore non-linear thought by way of an interactive dance party. Fragments of sentences, pieces of ideas, disconnected musings, and out-of-context phrases will hang adrift, floating around the space, to encourage your thoughts as well as your body to dance.
Enjoy musical stylings by DJ Luke Toney, light refreshments, and a playful environment.
We hope to see you and your friends there!
