Tibet, Lost Homeland: a Discussion with Geshe Tandhar
Monday, July 15, 7pm-9pm
Geshe Tandhar, a Tibetan monk in the Dalai Lama's Gelugpa lineage, is visiting Columbus for the Month of July. I've asked him to share publicly about his experience as a stateless Tibetan refugee. He will take questions about the current political situation of Tibet under Chinese occupation and the challenges for the Tibetan diaspora to maintain cultural identity and adapt after dislocation.
Since the invasion in 1959 the Chinese government has repressed political expression and limited religious freedom in the Tibetan plateau. An estimated 150,000 have fled as political refugees, mostly residing in India. A series of recent self-imhalations among Tibetans in and outside occupied territory underline the growing urgency of the situation.
By the Geshe's request, this event will collect donations for an organization that aids some of the many Tibetan exiles who are elderly and without family support. !00% of funds donated at this event will be directed to such an organization, probably Tibet Elderly Help.
Vegan snacks will be provided.
